Umami Review

Umami is a cozy puzzle toy that’s short but charming.

Umami from developer Mimmox is a cozy, food-themed 3D puzzle, less a traditional game and more of a toy. Each level tasks you with solving a hand-painted wooden block puzzle, magnetically attaching pieces to a bare central core. When pieces are in the right spot, they lock in place, and when the puzzle is complete, you can move on to the next one.

It’s a stress-free experience, though not as tactile as I’d hoped. Touching things in the levels or clicking pieces into place doesn’t feel as satisfying as it should, despite the responsive animations. I also wish the game’s world weren’t quite so static. Even so, the art is pretty, with a table setting environment for each puzzle, full of cute, hand-painted objects.

Really, there isn’t much here, and that’s the point. If you enjoy cute food and cute animals and want a relaxing, no-pressure time solving puzzles, then Umami is worth a look. The game includes 15 puzzles and will keep you busy for a couple of hours.

Umami is available now on Steam.
