Infinicrypt Review

A serviceable dungeon crawl dragged down by flat combat and a lack of personality.

Infinicrypt from developer Brett Page is a small dungeon-delving action roguelike where you play as one of three heroes exploring an infinitely reshaping crypt. Pick a knight, rogue, or wizard, and you’re off. The story is something or other about defeating a lich, but it’s immaterial.

Each hero plays differently. The knight wields a heavy sword and shield. The rogue uses knives and a dodge. The wizard specializes in range, with two equipable spells. All three have a unique specials mechanic. I only enjoyed the knight; the rogue’s specials system felt opaque, and the wizard’s cooldowns were severe enough to turn me off almost immediately. The knight can shield-slam enemies into walls, and that’s fun.

With each hero, you explore a dungeon floor, killing monsters and looting as you search for the stairs down. You’ll find consumables to heal, items for power, specials, and coin for shops. Die, and you start from the top. It’s an unremarkable but reliable loop.

Unfortunately, it got boring for me pretty quickly. Combat is simple and lacks tactile playfeel, so it doesn’t hold up over time. It either needs to be mechanically interesting or feel good to play, preferably both. This has neither. It just doesn’t have the addictive quality the genre lives on.

The game’s pixel art is competent, the enemy and character sprites outshining the dungeon’s environment. But there’s no real personality here. It’s all very generic.

As far as dungeon-crawling action roguelikes go, Infinicrypt isn’t one I’d recommend. It’s a crowded genre, and there are plenty of better games at lower price points. This one feels undercooked.

Infinicrypt

Infinicrypt delivers a familiar dungeon-crawling loop with three heroes, but flat combat and a lack of personality keep it from standing out.
