Ravenlok: Legendary Edition Review
Ravenlok: Legendary Edition is an action RPG spin on Alice in Wonderland that lacks depth to its gameplay, but looks gorgeous.

Ravenlok: Legendary Edition is an action RPG from Cococucumber. Like with their previous release, Echo Generation: Midnight Edition, Ravenlok: Legendary Edition is an updated version of an older release. The original version of Ravenlok came out in May 2023.
Ravenlok’s fairy tale story resembles Alice in Wonderland. A young girl is pulled into a mirror at her new country home and ends up in a magical world full of talking animals. She is thrust into an adventure to defeat an evil queen who threatens the realm. This is one of those cases where the narrative only serves as a framework for the player to explore and complete quests. The story is not why you should play Ravenlok.

Players hack and slash enemies with a sword, defend with a shield, dodge, and cast special magic attacks. The unremarkable action-RPG combat isn’t very challenging and feels too weightless; I wish there were a bit more power to attacks and their impact. There’s very little substance here, as you can just smack most enemies until they die. An update to the combat mechanics is a feature of this remaster, but since I haven’t played the original, I can’t identify what improvements were made.
The environments are beautiful and colorful, though the level design isn’t particularly interesting. Players complete a series of fetch quests punctuated with combat encounters and boss fights. The Legendary Edition features four new levels, so there’s plenty of new content for fans of the original game.
When I started the game, I assumed that the perspective was a fixed angle because the camera seemed to push, pull, or pan to follow my movement. It took me a little while to figure out that I could rotate the camera. The camera system lacks some dynamic tracking that could have greatly enhanced the beauty of environments while better serving the player while exploring or fighting.
Like Echo Generation, Ravenlok features a distinctive visual style that blends voxel-based models, normal 3D, and 2D elements. The result is a charming blend of retro and modern aesthetics. Seeing what every new area looked like was my biggest motivation to make my way through the game.

Ravenlok: Legendary Edition is a beautiful-looking game with run-of-the-mill combat and exploration. This will be a welcome update for fans of the original release, but I recommend this title for younger players looking for simpler games due to the lack of depth in the gameplay.
Ravenlok: Legendary Edition is available now on Steam.
