Lucy Dreaming Review

Tall Story Games’ Lucy Dreaming is a point-and-click adventure in the classic LucasArts style.

In this classically styled point-and-click adventure, you play as Lucy, a young girl plagued by recurring nightmares of falling through clouds. Over the course of the game, you explore both dreams and the small British town of Figgington to find how to rid Lucy of her nightmares. There are lots of characters to meet and puzzles to solve as the plot unfolds.

Gameplay echoes classic LucasArts adventures, where players have a series of verbs at their disposal that they can use to interact with their inventory and environment. The pixel art sometimes makes important details hard to find, but the game helpfully includes a feature to highlight hotspots of interest, cutting down on the pixel-hunting issues that plague some classic adventures. I still spent quite a while walking around in circles trying to figure out some of the puzzles.

The game’s writing can be witty, but I didn’t find it on the level of some recent throwback adventures, such as Loco Motive or Elroy and the Aliens. Frankly, I grew tired of Lucy and some of the other denizens of the game rather quickly. The pixel art presentation is a more modernized reimagining of the classic Maniac Mansion style. Truth be told, I didn’t find it to be very attractive. The color palette is somewhat muddy, and the execution feels stiff.

Perhaps the game just didn’t click with me. Other outlets have given the game glowing reviews, so other players might enjoy it far more than I did.

Lucy Dreaming is available on Steam, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One / Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
