Cubic Odyssey [Review]
Cubic Odyssey is a Minecraft esc survival game with a heavy sci-fi twist to it. The game has a voxel-like, cube style reminiscent of Minecraft but encourages more exploration and upgrading than building. In Cubic Odyssey there’s much to explore and mine but you won’t get frustrated at not finding the right materials. Getting lost in the wilderness is also not as stressful as it is in Minecraft.. Cubic Odyssey, you’re always focusing on your next step, I highly recommend use of the tutorial on your first play through. It will tell you the next best thing to build is and keep the materials you need on the screen. I consider this important because this game has a lot to do and a lot to learn from the start. I started the game a bit slow by making sure I collected plenty of materials so I would be able to upgrade what I could from the get go. This is easy to do because the game gives you a little handy dandy robot that actually scans the area! It can scan more than just materials but I found it most helpful to scan for specific ores and then just mine my way to them. The robot is also able to print items for you that you will need for a weapon, or other helpful tools (which is important). This game has dangerous enemies that creep out at night including robots that will shoot at you without hesitation, so it’s pretty helpful to have a ranged weapon yourself.
As the game goes on you’ll see that there’s always a better version of what you have. A better mining tool, a better backpack that holds more items, better jetpacks to fly further, better modifications for your gun. You should strive for the best as each tool has a significant role in your journey. A lot of survival games will have you make a tool for each job, an axe to cut down trees, a pickaxe to mine, or even a shovel to dig. Cubic Odyssey puts them all into one extractor tool that can mine anything. As you upgrade it will mine faster and faster. I really like the inclusion of one mining tool in this game because tools are very important in this game. You’ll have your tool bar packed with different weapons and healing items so I’m very grateful to not have half of it taken up by so much equipment. The next step in the journey is to repair a speeder, this is where the game will stop feeling like Minecraft and feel more like a sci-fi space adventure. The hover cycle is easy and quick to repair and you don’t need any extra junk like fuel, you can just drive off! I really prefer it this way because if a game centers around exploration I don’t want there to be penalties for exploring. Cubic Odyssey feels like it rewards you for it! You can craft yourself a teleporter after about thirty minutes of gameplay, and most civilizations you find will include one somewhere. Meaning you can fast travel between your home base and any civilization! This is a great way to get around or if you need to just make a quick trade at an ally’s base for some crafting materials. You might be thinking “What if I fast travel and leave my speeder at home?” Well, don’t worry! You can teleport your registered vehicle to wherever you’re standing!
Careful though, there is a slight catch. That being your battery life, virtually everything from teleporting to your extractor tool will slowly drain the battery of your electronics. You can make battery packs fairly easily and they will automatically equip once the one you’re using runs out. Just make sure you keep them stocked up, being out and about without any battery can be pretty dangerous and will cause your extractor to work very slowly. The game does have a multiplayer aspect that I was unable to experience myself. I’ve heard other people struggle with the co-op but because I didn’t play it for myself can’t comment on it. I would like to try it someday! This game is alot like No Mans Sky also. Players can engage in dog fights in space and even land on other planets. So far I really enjoy my time with this game. Whenever I can play this game in co-op ( Since that's all I typically care about) I will update my review with more information.
