Pirates VR: Jolly Roger [Review]

Pirates VR: Jolly Roger drops the player, shipwrecked, onto a remote Caribbean island. The adventure is a cursed treasure hunt. Players are guided by a witty and constantly sarcastic parrot who acts as both companion and narrator. The core objective is to explore the island's diverse environments, jungles, caves, and exedra in search of the legendary treasure of Davy Jones. The gameplay is a mix of exploration, light combat, and puzzle-solving. Players engage in platforming, climbing cliffs, swinging on ropes, and swimming through hidden passages.” Note, Swimming is awful”. A key feature is the magical lantern used to reveal secrets and solve riddles. Combat involves blasting enemies with a flintlock as your primary weapon. The game is packed with dangerous traps and offers a huge sense of exploration.

The island visuals of Jolly Roger offer some of the best graphics I have ever seen in VR. It’s also worth mentioning that the puzzles are genuinely satisfying to solve. Pirates VR Jolly Roger is "way too short." After barely 5 hours, and most of this was me wandering, the experience was pretty much over; it felt like the game was going to offer more, and I just left a long tutorial. For an adventure game, this lack of depth and longevity is a major failing. Although the Prarret is a fun character, the chatter is great. The parrot is also the core navigation. It doesn't do a great job of helping you through the game and you will spend most of your time trying to figure out what to do. Lastly, never have I ever played a game where I was being"spawn killed and greefed by the NPCs." This game is very fun, although the length and bugs kind of ruined it for me a bit. The length left me wanting or really expecting more.
