Rise of the Tomb Raider (Review)

Rise of the Tomb Raider is a game that masterfully combines action, exploration, and storytelling. Lara Croft’s journey feels more personal and mature, and witnessing her transformation into the iconic adventurer is genuinely captivating. The game’s environments are breathtaking, ranging from frozen mountains to ancient tombs filled with intricate puzzles and hidden secrets. Exploration is rewarding, combat is satisfying, and the survival mechanics add depth without becoming overbearing or just too obnoxious for players that are not into the survival genre.

Any player who’s a fan of cinematic action-adventure gameplay similar to the Uncharted series, with excellent exploration, would get a real kick out of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Rise of the Tomb Raider is an absolute must-play. Compared to the first chapter of the Tomb Raider trilogy, it’s a significant improvement in almost every aspect. The story is intriguing and well-crafted, showing Lara’s growth from the previous game. The characters are well-developed and bring depth to the narrative.  The balance between puzzles, platforming, and combat keeps the pacing enjoyable. The tombs offer some fun and mystery while exploring the map; much like walking around the world in an Elder Scrolls game or in a Legend of Zelda game like Tears of the Kingdom, players can stumble across caves only to find enemies and a puzzle waiting for them.

Overall, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the best game out of the reboot trilogy purely because of the survival aspect and co-op inclusion. For me the Co-Op survival gameplay truly stands out the most. Two friends can join forces to endure the harsh winter and make it until the helicopter arrives. Players must scavenge for items to craft weapons, gear for healing, and arrows. Once they locate the extraction point, they must call for the extraction and wait for their chance to leave. It’s an incredibly fun experience, and one of the best reasons to dive into the game. The Switch 2 port is fantastic, comparable to the release of the previous Tomb Raider game for the Switch 1 and 2. Rise of the Tomb Raider is available now for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Also related and unrelated, Limited Run has a collector's edition for the First game of the trilogy for the Switch 2, available with various goodies, as shown in the picture below.

Available on: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch 2
Release date: January 28, 2016
Release date: Nintendo Switch 2 - June 9, 2026
Final Verdict:
