Overthrown 1.0 [Review]
Overthrown is an enhanced version of Dragon Quest Builders, where you play as a character whose combat is a lot like Link from the Legend of Zelda series, with a stronger focus on management, village construction, citizen happiness, and protecting your creations. For those unfamiliar with Dragon Quest Builders, it’s a third-person game with many elements from games like Minecraft, that incorporates RPG elements, such as a regular story, hack and slash combat (unlike Minecraft’s sad nonexistent combat), and a light questing system, all while allowing players to build and craft.
Overthrown offers all these features but with greater satisfaction and colorful cartoony graphics. Players construct a kingdom from scratch, and as citizens move in, you manage them, and they even contribute to the maintenance of the village. Overthrown supports online multiplayer with up to six friends, making this the ideal way to play and engage in combat against the raids. The downside to the co-op is that the character customization is lacking. There isn’t enough variety to easily differentiate every created character and make them one of a kind for your server. Overthrown is easily one of my favorite co-op games to date. However, I’ve encountered issues like freezing and crashes when the game has too many moving entities on the screen. Additionally, the game appears to be the same as it was during its early access period on Xbox Game Pass, feeling unfinished and riddled with small glitches, including villagers not finding jobs and homes, and game-breaking issues. I’ve had to restart my world twice.
Despite these issues, Overthrown is a fun game. I recommend it, but only during a sale. Since the game recently transitioned from early access to version 1.0 and is receiving several minor updates, I’m confident that all my issues and the remnants of early access will be resolved. As more updates are released, I will re-review the game and provide a new score.
