Lou’s Lagoon [Review]
Lou's Lagoon features vibrant, charming art and an engaging, straightforward story. You explore islands, complete flying challenges, and tackle main missions while using the Swirler, a versatile vacuum tool, to collect resources like scrap, plants, and wildlife drops. These resources are used to repair buildings, craft goods, and support local communities. Flying the plane is fun, and upgraded Swirler mechanics make collecting items especially satisfying.
The story follows your created character as they search for their Uncle Lou, a pilot investigating a massive storm that disrupted the island network. Humanoid animal residents rely on you to reconnect their communities. Exploration expansive and stamina-free, with sprinting, climbing, swimming, and double-jumping available from the start. No need to worry about upgrading for regular human skills. The world map shows resource types, chest counts, and character locations. Side quests are marked with exclamation points, but only one can be pinned at a time. Some quests can bug if completed before talking to the giver. This is game breaking and requires a relaod of your save.
Travel between islands is by plane, with simple controls, automatic landings, and resource pickups from ocean debris and balloons. Fast travel unlocks after repairing radio towers on each island. The exploration is this game’s strong suit and is a lot like Breath of the Wild with a few other games sprinkled in. Although this game does have its own identity, it’s not on the massive scale that Zelda has.
Despite its charm, backtracking and resource grinding will be a bit of a chore for some. For me it was grating Inventory limits and manual resource collection demand careful management, though plane cargo storage and chest upgrades help. It’s worth noting that combat is not a thing in this game; the focus is exploration, quest completion, and rebuilding the islands while searching for your missing uncle. Anyone wanting a wholesome game with plenty of explortaiona nd thinsg to do would absolutely get a kick out of this game.
