Kena: Bridge of Spirits [Review]
Join Kena's captivating story as a Spirit Guide on a quest to unravel the past.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Ember Labs’ attempt to bring the Pixar aesthetic to the gaming world, is a beautifully crafted game that blurs the lines between cinema and video games. It’s reminiscent of the early 2000s, when video games like Final Fantasy had beautifully animated cutscenes, but the graphics often fell short. However, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, much like current Final Fantasy games, seamlessly integrates in-game graphics and gameplay. Kena Bridge of Spirits has beautiful graphics and is one of the most impressive games I’ve seen on an OLED TV.
While Kena is categorized as an action-adventure game, it’s more of a puzzle game at its core, with a small mix of combat. To be fair, the same could be said for older Zelda titles like Ocarina of Time. Even then, Kena: Bridge of Spirits draws comparisons to Ocarina of Time, which is good company to be in. Kena’s combat isn’t the most engaging at first, as it feels sluggish and requires more dodging than engaging in actual hand-to-hand combat. However, the bow proves to be a very useful tool. As the game progresses, Kena learns some new abilities that change the flow of combat, making it a far more enjoyable experience.
The story and objective of the game revolve around Kena, a spirit guide, who embarks on a quest to find the sacred Mountain Shrine. Her mission is to help free the spirits trapped in a forgotten village and unlock abilities to aid her during her quest. Along the way, she’s accompanied by cute little creatures called the Rot, who can wear silly hats and assist her with various tasks. Overall, Kena: Bridge of Spirits is an outstanding game. It offers an easily engaging, wholesome story and is rich in depth. It’s one of the most captivating games I’ve played, and it’s certainly one of the best of this generation.
