Happy's Humble Burger Cult
Happy's Humble Burger Cult is a ridiculously fun horror themed game that shares similarities with Overcooked, but with a unique twist. The game is playable with up to 32 players (though the recommended number is 4, and I personally recommend 6). The objective is to grill burgers, serve customers, and meet your quota before the kitchen descends into chaos. When the monster starts hunting, you must escape and collect your hard-earned cash to survive another shift.
You and your crew are hired to participate in an experiment conducted by the Paragon Corporation. It appears to be a typical fast-food job: grill burgers, fry sides, pour drinks, manage the register, meet your quota, and ensure customer satisfaction, but boy, is it not. The game is set in a first-person perspective, allowing players to shove guests and each other (though I advise against pushing guests as it wastes time due to penalties).
My team was. Completely locked in the entire time, pumping out orders; this game does a fantastic job keeping you completely focused and engaged throughout the game. The food names are absurd and hilarious, much like in Overcooked, and there’s a specific process for preparing each item. All food items must be prepared in the exact order displayed on the Kitchen Display System screen. While in the kitchen, various enemies and creatures will enter and harass you while you’re preparing food. These include a Dr Who-esque robot that only moves when you look away and a flying creature that explodes upon impact. Players can use items, but I’m still unsure of their specific purpose. Some items provide a high, nicotine buzz, or a drunk effect, but their exact benefits remain unclear. I really just don’t understand.
Regardless of the confusion, the game is a hoot and a hauler. Another feature I forgot to mention is the incantations. While they are largely a fun, random, and mostly pointless gimmick, there are moments when they prove to be helpful and entertaining. For instance, one distinguishing feature of this game compared to Overcooked is that when you reach the quota, players are required to clean up and complete any task given before a monster hunts you down and kills you. Now, you might wonder where the incantations come into play. Well, there’s an incantation that allows you to say, “Take me where I am not,” and it teleports you away. OMG, I used this incantation to escape multiple times. Yelling spells and watching them work is incredibly exhilarating. The game also offers a variety of lobby minigames, a dedicated kitchen for practice, virtual gambling, cosmetic items to unlock, levels to unlock, secrets to discover, voice-activated secrets, level modifiers, and more.
Happy Humbles Burger Cult is an exceptional game that absolutely deserves a console release. What’s even more incredible is that it’s only $10 on Steam. This game shined on the Steam Machine and on the Steam Deck, so if it’s released on the Nintendo Switch 2, I would definitely purchase it on day one.
