So, I have to admit I’m a a bit late to the Overwatch hype train. I saw some awesome gameplay videos online, and in my browsing through Twitch I noticed it was gathering quite an audience, but it didn’t manage to pique my interest until within the last couple weeks.
It was my birthday recently, and as a casual request to my friends I put it out there that a copy of Overwatch would be appreciated. Well, apparently Archmage, Zero Omega and Scarlette pooled to get me the Collector’s edition, and I have to say I’m stoked to show it off!
First, let me just say this thing is huge. When the package arrived I knew what it was, but at first I was annoyed at the waste because it surely didn’t need that big of a box…did it?
Yes. Yes it did. (Banana for scale of course) The outer sleeve features a rundown of the goodies included within on the left side, as well as a small mural on the right. Front and center is the trademark Overwatch logo, of course.
Removing the sleeve reveals an inner box that is actually two pieces – a more sturdy “sleeve” that contains the box that actually contains all the goods.
One cool thing about this sturdier sleeve is that it has a little handle to easily slide the main box in and out. Whoever thought of this little detail up at Blizzard HQ – this nerd thanks you.
So, you slide this puppy out and the mural that you saw on the sleeve is mirrored on the white box itself around the side (more of that later).
Ok, so then you get to the fun part – actually cracking open the main box!
Taking up the entirety of the left side is the Soldier 76 figure, and it is pretty hefty. On the right the only thing you can see initially is the Overwatch art book. Inside it has some awesome visuals from the character design process, and on the back it has the Overwatch slogan “The World Needs Heroes”
After removing some velcro ties holding down the book, underneath you find another cache of spoils: the limited edition metal game case, the Overwatch Soundtrack, and a collection of location postcards from the game.
Have I mentioned these postcards are pretty legit?
As I mentioned briefly earlier, there’s a cool mural-type art along the side of the main box, which you can see more here:
Even if the set stopped there I would say it’s a pretty sweet collector’s edition. The packaging is all well thought out, and the bonuses are appealing. However, the last part of this unboxing puts this set over the moon:
Included in this collector’s edition is a premium-grade 12.8″ statue of Soldier 76, who many Overwatch fans will recognize as the first hero players control during the tutorial stages. This statue is gorgeous, and incredibly detailed.
It’s packaged away nice and neat, but it also is very simple – it only has the main statue and a very sturdy base. No accessories to tussle with or anything like that, just a solid, impressive statue.
I could continue to drool over it, but I’ll let the pictures do the talking.
Overall, this Collector’s Edition is a fantastic buy, even at $130 on Amazon. The statue itself easily makes up the difference in price between the standard game and the collector’s edition, not to mention the amazing artbook, soundtrack, postcards, bonus skins and, of course, the terrific packaging it all comes in.
Scarlette and I will be sharing our thoughts on Overwatch itself very soon, but in short: if you haven’t picked it up yet, you absolutely should. If you have some extra money, this collector’s edition will certainly be worth it.
Enjoy it, heroes! I look forward to seeing you on the battlefield!
