With no technical issues, I was able to review this week’s episode of Himouto! Umaru-Chan R in a more timely manner. Need to catch up? Read my review of last week’s episode here!
It’s finally time for Taihei’s business trip. He, Bomba, Alex, and their boss Kanau, head to Hamamatsu to work on a security system for a restaurant. Not wanting to be left out, Umaru joins them under the guise of wanting to eat fresh eel. In reality, she tags along to spy on Tahei and Kanau. Acting as a possessive and protective little sister, she worries about Taihei until he assuages her fears.
While on the business trip, Taihei reveals his cooking prowess to the head chef. Later on, the chef is referred to by the surname “Ebina”, and he removes his hat to reveal a familiar looking hair tie. Taihei recognizes it as a hair tie identical to the one Ebina-chan wears, and remembers a conversation he had with her. Back during the holidays, Ebina-chan told Taihei she was looking for her older brother in Tokyo. She had heard he had also come to Tokyo and was working in a restaurant. It turns out her information wasn’t too far off!
Back at home, Taihei discovers the squalid conditions Umaru was living in during his absence. After tidying up, Umaru volunteers to run errands with Taihei. Later on, Umaru coyly admits she wasn’t bored while he was gone, then breaks down and admits she was lonely. Given how their interactions usually go, it was nice to see Umaru show her feelings for her older brother.
Besides the connection between the Chef and Ebina, nothing major or noteworthy happened in this episode. Taihei does seem to be struggling with the idea of being a career man when he could pursue his passion of cooking. Even that though is only briefly touched upon. It honestly felt like a fluff and filler episode. The one positive was the animation of the eel dishes and encouragement to imagine the smell. If only smell-o-vision was real!
