State of the Role 2021
I’m sure by now you’ve heard the fantastic news about Critical Role’s new limited series! We’ll help break down what to expect from this new adventure.
There’s a great breakdown of story, plot, and a timeline of Exandria Unlimited put together by Dani Carr HERE on Critical Role’s website. It’s sounding like this series will be a great way to get your uninitiated friends into Critical Role. The series is set near enough to the two campaign that there will hopefully be easter eggs aplenty, while also not spoiling or relying on previous campaign knowledge making it easy for new friends to jump in and see if Critical Role is for them.
While no official news about the start of Campaign 3 have been released, the State of the Role made it very clear that a new campaign is coming down the pipeline soon. In the mean time, we have a terribly exciting new show and GM to enjoy.
The animated trailer and cast member introduction were enough to get me slathering over this series. I am so excited to see a new GM helm the series, and Aabria Iyengar is a wonderfully refreshing addition to the Critical Role family. We got a taste of her style as she’s guest starred in two Narrative Telephone episodes and the Blackwood one-shot. I love her energy, creativity, and easy improv style. I can’t wait to see what she can do with Tal’Dorei and these new adventurers. It was terribly smart of Critical Role to give us several hours of Aabria as a player before introducing her as GM. After her Narrative Telephone guest spot I had a strong suspicion that something exciting was happening behind the scenes. It wasn’t by chance that she told a thrilling heist story set in the dregs of Emon, now was it?
Along with a new GM, we also have two new cast members to get to know as well! Aimee Carrero of She-Ra, Blindspot, and Elena of Avalon fame will try out her DnD chops for the first time at the Critical Role table. From her introduction in the State of the Role video it’s looking like she’s an absolute natural. The second addition to the player’s table is Robbie Daymond, renowned paragon in the voice actor community. In the few snippets we got to see, his energy seemed magnetic and vibrant on the table. It will be a thrill to see how these new talents will change the dynamic at the table and mix with Mercer, Johnson, and O’Brien’s player styles. ALSO, how freakin exciting is it that Mercer gets to join this series as a player! Finally, he gets to sit back and enjoy his world from a PC perspective!
Critical Role has been itching to get these new friends to the table for quite some time, but with the pandemic happening and having to go remote and social distanced, there were no great opportunities for guest stars during Campaign 2. So instead, we get something even better! Catch the first episode Thursday, June 24th at 7pm. Don’t miss the Critical Role Review of each episode of this mini series out Mondays here at The Geekly Grind.
Until next time Critters! Don’t worry, it’s almost Thursday!
