Luto Review [Review]

Luto, developed by Broken Bird Games and published by SelectaPlay, is a psychological horror experience that excels in building atmospheric dread. Having previously reviewed the demo, I was provided with a full game key and found the complete experience to be a phenomenal debut for Broken Bird Games.

Unlike many horror games, Luto doesn't rely on jump scares or constant pursuit. This absence of immediate threats greatly heightened my anticipation for such moments, ultimately drawing me deeper into the game's unsettling world. The lack of a physical antagonist effectively immerses the player in a pervasive sense of helplessness and being trapped, which is central to Luto's horror.

The game's premise, being lost in an endless maze that is supposed to be your own home, is brilliantly executed. It transforms a place of comfort into one of disorientation and fear. Navigating the confusing, shifting architecture doors leading to unexpected rooms, stairs descending to higher floors “witch was initially challenging but ultimately made sense and stuck with me”.

Luto's sound design is exceptional. The use of surround sound, particularly for those with 5.1 or 7.1 systems, significantly enhances the environmental immersion and the overall scare factor. The audio mixing and atmospheric ambiance are masterfully crafted, truly putting you into the environment. Available on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox, Luto does a fantastic job of showing the degradation of the main character’s mind.
