Slothwerks’ Meteorfall: Krumit's Tale is a grid-based dungeon crawler roguelike deckbuilding game. While the world and art are fantastic, the game struggles to balance its clever systems with punishing RNG that can pull the fun out of things.
The core of the game is deckbuilding and exploring randomly generated dungeons in a card layout. Your hero's cards shuffle into a dungeon deck with monsters, then deal out on a 3x3 grid. Defeating monsters earns gold to acquire your own items and abilities, with new cards replacing cleared ones in the grid. After each dungeon, you gain powerful cards and perks, passive traits that bend the game's rules.

The system offers genuine strategic depth as you balance immediate needs against long-term deck construction. With five heroes, each with over 50 unique cards plus a neutral pool, there's substantial variety. The dozens of available perks further expand replayability, allowing diverse approaches for each run. Unfortunately, the RNG can be brutally punishing, occasionally creating scenarios that feel overwhelmingly unfair. What starts as a manageable challenge can suddenly spiral downward through bad card draws or grid layout. At least that’s my experience so far.
Where Krumit's Tale sparkles is in its presentation. Evgeny Viitman's art is exceptional; the distinctive style is reminiscent of Adventure Time but darker, avoiding that show's CalArts style for something more textured. Animations are fluid and expressive, breathing life into what could have been a very stale experience.

Meteorfall: Krumit's Tale offers clever mechanics but is hampered by frustrating randomness. I still love how it looks, so I plan to stick with it a bit longer to see if my luck changes.
Meteorfall: Krumit’s Tale is available now on Steam, PlayStation 4/5, and Nintendo Switch.
Played on: PS5
