Athanasia Impressions

Survive close encounters with prehistoric predators in the first-person survival horror game Athanasia.

Athanasia is an upcoming first-person survival horror game from Momentum Games and Neon Doctrine. Inspired by classics like Dino Crisis and System Shock, this game promises to be a compelling and immersive experience.

In Athanasia, Carmen Flores is a researcher and explorer tasked with investigating a mysterious South American facility where disappearances have been reported. As Carmen, you’ll discover the truth about the facility, as you contend with deadly prehistoric predators that now roam the grounds.

The game feels a lot like a classic Resident Evil game, except in first-person. Getting around the facility involves solving environmental puzzles with the tools at your disposal, which you’ll sometimes have to combine into new items.

In true survival horror fashion, your resources are precious, and you must pick your battles. The dinos you encounter are far more powerful than you, and whenever possible, the best thing to do is to outsmart them—sneak by unseen or somehow use the environment to your advantage. In its best moments, the game reminded me of Alien: Isolation, a favorite of mine that still holds up nine years after release. Like in that game, my encounters with the creatures in Athanasia were tense and terrifying.

The graphics are in a 32-bit style, the kind of real-time 3D graphics you’d see on an original PlayStation. It works well, except in cases where some environments are excessively dark. The game could benefit from a better lighting system. The dinosaur models and their animations were a little bit crude and could also use improvement.

A release date hasn’t yet been announced, but a demo is available on Steam. I played the demo on my Steam Deck with a controller, which wasn’t the best experience, as I had to map the game’s keyboard and mouse controls. I hope that by the time the game releases, the devs add controller support. Despite that, I still enjoyed my time with the game and recommend it for survival horror aficionados.

Wishlist Athanasia on Steam and try the demo!
