Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny [Review]

Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny is a traditional dungeon crawler that brings together beloved Nickelodeon cartoon characters. The story begins with Timmy Turner wishing to experience a Table Top RPG with real magic and enemies. This wish, granted by Cosmo and Wanda, inadvertently causes a crossover of various Nickelodeon worlds. The game features nine playable Nicktoons characters, a somewhat limited roster given the vast number of Nickelodeon series. However, each character is assigned a unique class, ensuring distinct movesets and adding a little bit of depth to the gameplay. While other characters make appearances and have voice lines, they remain unplayable. Notably, all original voice actors have reprised their roles, with the exception of Avatar: The Last Airbender characters.

Gameplay is straightforward: players select a character/class and navigate through dungeon-crawler-style levels. The characters are generally easy to learn, allowing for seamless swapping between them. Players familiar with games like Cats Quest or Cult of the Lamb will find the mechanics familiar. One significant drawback encountered was an overabundance of in-game currency, making upgrades and the overall game excessively easy.

It's important to note that this game is designed for children and families and shines as a multiplayer experience. It offers a simple gameplay loop, though lacking significant depth, it does feature interesting level designs, a good variety of enemies, and well-animated, distinct characters. Unfortunately, the combat lacks depth, and there's no inherent replayability features such as New Game Plus or a boss rush mode. Overall, Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny offers a lot of fun for families and can be a nice addition to a game library with kids. Otherwise, it might be best to wait for a sale.
