While this season brought us the end of the holiday season, it also ushered in the end of the fall anime season. Yes, the time has come for the season finale of The Ancient Magus’ Bride. Need to catch up? Catch my review of last week’s episode here.
Lindel helps Chise put the finishing touches on her wand. With some gemstones and Chise’s hair, her wand ends up looking like a little robin. Touching the wand transports her to a sort of purgatory where she meets Nevin. At this crossroads between the living and the dead Nevin tells Chise that she should put more value in herself. He reminds her that she has helped many people, and that devaluing herself makes them seem less than worthless.
This chance meeting makes Chise realize she needs to be around the people who make her feel valued. With the help of the faeries and her wand, Chise rushes home to be with Elias. The amount of magic she uses to get home causes her to fall unconscious for several days, during which time she dreams about her past. Upon awakening, she reflects on how much she enjoys where she is in life, falling back into an easygoing routine.
Although subtle, this finale had a big transformation occur with Chise and Elias’ relationship. Both comment at different times how warm they feel at the house while the other is there. While this comment may seem small, it shows how much they value and appreciate each other for the creature comforts they provide. They say misery loves company, and for two beings that have been cast aside by society, it’s good that they can commiserate.
I’ve said several times that this show has suffered from pacing issues. The finale continued this streak, but based on the after credits scene, it looks like this streak will be broken next season. Chise and Elias appear to face bigger monsters and end up in high stakes situations. I can’t wait to see what the next season brings for our mage and his apprentice!
The first season of The Ancient Magus’ Bride is available for viewing on Crunchyroll and VRV platforms.
