Disgaea Mayhem [Review]

Disgaea Mayhem is a fun and interesting take on a well establish series. This time around, players will experience a fresh approach to the series by switching it from a Turn Based tactics game to a Dynasty Warriors musou style game. While I am eagerly anticipating the next true SRPG entry, this spin off is genuinely fun. Does it hold a candle to the core titles? Not exactly. Shifting the focus to one main controllable character is a brilliant design choice, as it prevents the player from becoming overwhelmed by managing squads of monsters and human classes. The buddy system serves as a great trade off, allowing you to customize a secondary AI companion from a selection of 16 different monsters.

The story is somewhat brief compared to past Disgaea games, giving players about 10 hours of gameplay. Luckily for Disgaea fans, the narrative remains quintessentially Disgaea, being off the wall, quirky, out of pocket, and packed with the bizarre humor and suggestive innuendo that the series is famous for. Regarding the value proposition, is it worth the $60 price tag? Honestly, no. It is a solid, enjoyable experience, but given the amount of content and overall quality, it feels like it should have been priced closer to $30. Ultimately, this is a fun game and a treat for fans of the series, and it shines brightly on the Nintendo Switch 2.
