Rick Remender’s brutal assassin-centric series delivers a breathtaking penultimate issue as Sonny and Xavier struggle to survive against a surprise attack from a band of skilled killers.
After the harrowing ordeal they both survived, and a refreshing “beach episode” last issue, it only seemed fair that this issue would feature a more harrowing, violent, adrenaline-fueled series of events.
I don’t want to dig into too much detail here for fear of spoilers, but rest assured we get to see Sonny’s skills in action. He’s like John Wick without the plot armor, dispatching assailants with well placed shots, and using his environment to his advantage.
Typically with an action-heavy issue like this, it would be easy enough to get lost in the blur and yearn for some sort of deeper connection. Thankfully, Remender has meticulously crafted our emotional connection to Sonny and Xavier in the preceding issues, so that a simple command or fleeting look is enough to convey panels of exposition. The emotional prep work has been done, which allows us all to enjoy a nearly full issue of heart-pumping action.
A masterful issue from Remender, to be sure. I still remember when the first issue came out and I thought it was one of the most addictive opening issues I’ve ever read. I’m pleased to see that the momentum has only picked up from there, and this entire series has been an unexpected and wonderful retreat.
