After leaked footage gave us our first full look at Venom earlier today, Sony decided to release their latest trailer. I’ll preface this by saying that I am massive fan of the Venom character. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at my pen name. With that in mind, I have high standards for a Venom film. I felt unbeleivably let down by the Venom we saw in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Topher Grace as Eddie Brock, seriously?! Enough with the past though, lets dive into this trailer?
First with the good. I really enjoy Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Eddie Brock. His personality and mannerisms feel spot on for the character. I think it is genius to depict Eddie as freaked out and on the edge of sanity. That is a very real take on how someone would act in this situation. Here’s hoping the symbiote doesn’t bully Brock around too much because that’s not quite how their relationship is in the comics. For now though, I’m pleased with the human element of the film. The voice for the symbiote sounds great. When I read Venom comics, that is pretty much the voice I hear in my head.
Now for the stuff that worries me. The symbiote doesn’t look great when it’s projecting itself from Eddie’s body. The transition between the symbiote and Eddie look too rough and comes off as very fake. I know it’s all fake, but CGI can make things look pretty real and this did not come off as real. The transformation into Venom looks great. I love that they are going to make him the proper stature and build. The face however… could be better. The teeth looks unpolished. The concept of having rows of teeth like a shark is cool, but there’s just something off about them. The CGI for the head in general still looks unfinished… at least I hope it’s unfinished. I’m still getting a hint of Spider-Man 3 Venom in the face which is worrisome.
I am extremely hopeful that is movie does well. I have been dying for a great Venom on the big screen and I will be cheering for this film all the way. It appears as though we may see multiple symbiote hosts with all of the patients connected to the Life Foundation. When Eddie is infected with the symbiote, it looks like a female patient attacks him. This may elude to Scream who was originally a spawn from the main Venom symbiote. Considering it has been confirmed this film will be based on the Venom: Lethal Protector, it makes sense that Scream would appear as she and 4 other symbiotes make their first appearance in this run. Rumors are also circulating that we may see Carnage in this film, which would make for an insane third act.
Take a look at the trailer and let me know what you think. Do you think Venom will have the white spider logo on his chest? That would mean Spider-Man has already broken away from the symbiote before. We know that Tom Holland has a cameo as Peter Parker in the movie. What does that mean for both of their characters moving forward? Like I said, I am a massive Venom fan and love to talk about it. Here’s hoping the Lethal Protector finally gets his long deserved dues.
