Episode 5 of D.Gray-man Hallows brings a lot of the cast together in the same room, though their motivations for being there and methods of travel seem suspect.
Where we last left off, the exorcists were in the process of being overwhelmed by the combined forces of the Noah. But, as things began to look the most grim… the Noah apparently switched strategies to give everyone else a plan for survival?
It really is not clear what the goal is of the Noah in Episode 5. After debilitating Yu in the previous episode, they merely use his memories to transport him to the facility where the half-akuma are being created. Waiting at the facility are the Millenium Earl, a few of the remaining Noah, Reeve, Johnny, and a stitched together corpse named Alma Karma. Allen joins the group shortly thereafter through what appears to be a portal used by one of the Noah to get there.
The transition of all of the characters to the same place feels a little disjointed. While the Millenium Earl merely walks in with his friends, the arrival of Yu and Allen place weird temporal constraints on the action. It just seems contrived that everyone would crash into the same room at the same time, even if this was part of the Millenium Earl’s plan.
The Noah reveal that their goal in coming to the facility has to do with Yu and Alma. Specifically, something in Yu’s memories may be useful in awakening Alma who can be used to kill the remaining exorcists. Though it is not clear why that’s necessary. Everyone in the room is being held in place by the magic of the Noah and the rest are fairly easily incapacitated by the Noah who can break into people’s heads. Seems weird that with all of this power, they don’t just walk through the room slitting throats.
The Earl takes the opportunity of Allen being available to confront the Fourteenth in Allen’s head. The Fourteenth emerges long enough to promise to kill the Millenium Earl and take his place. Then Allen comes back and headbutts the Earl in the face. In the confusion, Yu snatches Road (for seemingly no reason other than to use her bow to tie up his hair) who is hanging around in doll form. Then, with Road in mouth, he attacks the Millenium Earl.
Allen and Yu attempt to escape, but their retreat is quickly blocked by the Noah. Wisely, the Noah who first captured Yu, then generates a portal into Yu’s memories, capturing both Yu and Allen inside.
Episode 5 was fairly light on interesting action with most of the Noah holding back on doing anything useful with their abilities. The earlier attacks, which could have wiped out all available exorcists, apparently only occurred to get everyone into the same room together. But given the super powerful abilities of the Noah, it just comes off as odd that they would stick to such an elaborate scheme.
