Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Episode 1

By: Rae and EyeSpyeAlex

With two of us on The Geekly Grind team extremely excited about the return of Cardcaptor Sakura, we decided to team up to review this season. Going into the episode, our nostalgia thirst was strong. Was Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card able to quench that thirst? Read on to find out!

This latest season opens with Sakura getting ready to attend middle school. The adventures with the Clow cards are in the past, and she is looking forward to this next chapter of her life. Sakura’s best friend Tomoyo Daidouji is right by her side, as is Syaoran Li, who is back from Hong Kong for good. Just when it seems like her life is finally going to be normal, Sakura has a strange dream which turns her world upside down.

In her dream, Sakura sees a mysterious hooded figure surrounded by clear cards. She wakes up as she is attacked, only to discover all her Clow cards have turned clear and her necklace has transformed. With her new necklace comes a new staff, which aids Sakura when she is attacked on her way to school. She is able to subdue and capture the creature, sealing it in one of the clear cards.

While Sakura may be in a new school and dealing with new issues, the art and feel of the show remain similar to that of the original series. The characters look identical, just brightened up a little. There’s a clear improvement in the animation quality, allowing for all the nostalgia while still bringing an updated, improved aesthetic. It’s worth mentioning too that the art Clear Card is stunning – beautiful colours and details (those cherry blossoms!), with opening art that calls back to both the original openings and to the stunning CLAMP art pieces featuring Sakura in wide, beautiful scenes. The opening theme is beautiful, the ending theme is adorable, and Sakura and Syaoran’s reunion is bound to bring a little bit of happiness into your day.

This first episode of Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card proves that the more things seem to change, the more they stay the same. The original cast also returned to reprise their roles, which keeps the show feeling like a continuation. All in all, we would recommend any fans of the original series to watch this show.

New episodes of Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card air on Sunday’s on Crunchyroll and VRV platforms.
